A complete understanding of the circadian system requires a detailed description of the
genes that are regulated by the clock, along with the mechanisms by which circadian
oscillators signal time information to regulate the output pathways. Research in Neurospora
crassa pioneered the isolation of clock-controlled genes (ccgs) and has furthered our understanding
of how the clock transmits information through the output pathways to regulate
rhythmic processes. In this chapter, we will review what is currently known about the output
pathways in N. crassa and the possible mechanisms by which the central oscillator controls
rhythmic gene expression. In addition, we will compare what is known about the N. crassa
circadian clock to that of another ascomycete, Aspergillus.
