There is a broad range of liver diseases that can occur during the course of pregnancy, including disease states which are specific to pregnancy and those which occur coincidentally with pregnancy. This chapter provides a brief overview of liver diseases unique to pregnancy, all of which are discussed in depth in subsequent chapters. With respect to illnesses not unique to pregnancy, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview, including the affect of these illnesses on the outcome of pregnancy, as well as treatment options. Topics reviewed include pregnancy and viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, gallstones and biliary tract disorders, hepatic and portal vein thrombosis, hepatocellular adenoma, primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and portal hypertension. Pregnancy after liver transplantation is also discussed.
