Psychiatric consultation can play an important role in the assessment of candidates for solid organ transplantation.1 It can be even more critical in the assessment and manage- ment of patients who are candidates for composite tissue allotransplantation (CTA) in general, and specifically hand transplantation, as the transplanted tissue will be constantly visible to the patient and impact upon body image and identity. This article examines psychiatric considerations in hand transplantation, including issues related to body image and amputation, as well as the potential psychological benefits and risks of the procedure.
