Global leather industry is undergoing paradigm shift from chemical to bio‑based leather making to meet the growing environmental challenges. A short appraisal on the use of enzymes in current leather processing has been presented. Although enzymes find use in many areas of leather processing, enzyme‑only dehairing and fibre opening presents a breakthrough approach. This methodology is being explored to avoid obnoxious sodium sulphide and to eliminate lime sludge. Enzyme applications for some unusual areas of leather making are also briefly outlined.
