By a variety of approaches, annexins have been discovered as abundant proteins in phagocytic leukocytes. No essential role for any of the annexins has been firmly established, but recent studies provide evidence for annexin involvement in membrane traffic during phagocytosis and in exocytosis from neutrophils. Additional intensive study has also indicated that annexins may interact extracellularly with leukocytes to attenuate inflammation. Since that aspect is covered in detail by Flower in chapter 12 of this volume, this review will exclusively focus on the intracellular behavior and function of annexins in phagocytic leukocytes.
